Enameled jewelry reflected these ideals

Georgian Period: 1714-1830- The Georgian period used naturalistic designs of leaves, birds, ribbons, feathers, flowers and insects in engraved gemstones. Intaglio was employed in gemstone design. Cameo brooches were once again featured and earrings saw a rise in popularity with semi-precious stones embellishing these designs. Amethyst, turquoise, garnets and coveted pearls were seen in Georgian pieces.

Early Victorian Period: 1837-1860- The Gothic Revival Movement featured religious sentiment and enameled jewelry reflected these ideals. Floral sprays, animal themes and multicolored metal work came into prominence.

Mid-Victorian(Grand) Period: 1860-1885- Etruscan frame designs were employed in setting elaborate multi-colored stone jewelry. Rosettes, seashells, mosaics and fringes became extremely popular. In 1861, Prince Albert’s death spawned the omnipresence of jet, a hard, black semi-precious stone able to be polished to a high sheen, in response and in mourning of the Prince’s passing. Lockets, chains, brooches and cuff bracelets were in vogue in the 1880’s.

Late Victorian (Aesthetic) Period: 1885-1900- This was the age of the diamond. Authentic birds, claws and scarabs were used and set in gold, bronze or silver, changing the symbolism of these time-honored ornamentations. Exquisite pendants with pearls and varicolored stones were used in the late 1880’s.

Arts and Crafts Movement: 1894-1923- The Arts and Crafts Exhibitions Society was formed in 1888 in opposition to the mass-production ideals of the Industrial Revolution, preferring instead to keep their workmanship generalized. These craftsmen utilized brilliantly colored uncut stones and created metalwork of silver.

Tiffany and Co have teamed up with jewellery designers

  • Posted on June 12, 2010 at 3:08 am

Fortunately, retailers have taken notice of our desires plus the size of the average purse and are commissioning designers to create the same high fashion lines for a fraction of the cost, making such jewellery more accessible than ever. Many jewellery retailers such as Astley Clark and Tiffany and Co have teamed up with jewellery designers to create unique lines in their own style to be sold at these retailers. Some lines have become very strong such as Paloma Picasso’s designs featured at Tiffany & Co. Her distinctive style has a clear following and has become synonymous with the Tiffany brand further strengthening their customer base.

As retailers are catching on to the advantages of taking on more big name jewellery designers to create ranges specifically for their stores, they are putting more of a spotlight on the designers such as seen by the launch of the Julien Macdonald Jewellery range which is very fashion led and will start at prices that everyone can afford and be found on the high street.

Many home-grown designers, like Welsh born Julien Macdonald, have found it hard to obtain a big enough market on their own to sell their often handcrafted wares. Unfortunately there are not many organisations in the industry that provide support to young budding jewellery designers. By building relationships with some of the larger retail houses, the designers have found a way to make a living with their art and get the support they require.

Take care of your silver jewelry

  • Posted on March 20, 2010 at 1:38 am

Since the prices of other precious metals such as platinum and gold has been rising and hitting values never seen before, many are starting to buy silver jewelry, which is cheaper and extremely beautiful, being whiter than platinum, actually. A common problem with it is that even though they can look good when first bought (their polished surface is like a mirror), is is easy for them to tarnish. This happens when the item is exposed with oxygen. Silver oxide will be formed, which is a kind of black residue that looks really bad. To avoid this, is is possible to cover them with a thin layer of glass which blocks the oxygen.

This, however, is not available right now. In fact, since you cannot buy this type of jewelry, you can expect those nice silver pieces to eventually tarnish. What is available right now is using a rhodium layer. While not as silver it does help with this problem. Be sure not to polish this layer, as you will be removing it! Another use of this rhodium layer is with white gold jewelry. A natural protection to silver pieces (which is why you would not need to polish them as often) is skin oils as well as regular washing. Items that make direct contact with your skin will be kept safe from tarnish.

There are some chemicals that actually accelerate oxidation and to take care of your silver jewelry you should by all means avoid them. An example for this is that if you are a swimmer, then you will notice that if you use a chlorinated pool, the silver material will get tarnished really fast. This happens because of the specific influence of chloride in them. Silver is highly reactive. Substances such as this chlorine and sulfur react with silver and form new black compounds. You should make sure the water you use on your daily life is high in sulfur (you will need to be especially careful if you are getting your water from a well since that type of water usually gets exposed to these).

So how do you really take care of your jewelry? Using a simple silver polish works just fine and most of these products will also leave a little thin layer that prevents tarnish. A simple homemade solution is to actually use toothpaste. Just put some on your fingers and then rub it, cleaning with water afterwards. This is a great solution to take care of your silver jewelry in a much cheaper way. Be careful not to polish pieces that are covered with rhodium since that will start to come off easily.

Where you store the item when you are not using it is also important. Getting an air-tight container or covered with a specific kind of cloth (that avoids tarnish) are two easy solutions. If you bought some of these pieces, then I am sure you want to keep it nice and that is not always easy, but these simple tips should greatly help you to take care of your silver jewelry.

Tiffany Gift Kits I

  • Posted on July 21, 2009 at 3:06 am

Recently, I heard the news Tiffany selected ten perfect gifts, wrapped in Tiffany Blue®. Each is a must-have on someone’s list. From famous jewelry icons and colorful gemstones to holiday mementos, the collection shines with a heritage of quality and legendary style that was established with Tiffany’s founding in 1837. Let’s have a detail look.

1. Tiffany revived the rose cut, an early style of gemstone cutting inspired by the petals of an opening rosebud. The rose-cut diamonds are combined with round brilliant-cut diamonds in earrings ($5,000) that capture the beauty of freshly-picked blossoms

4. Tiffany’s heritage as a premier watchmaker can be traced through a timeline of innovations that extends from the jeweler’s founding in 1837 to the latest Tiffany timepiece: an oval-shaped cocktail watch of diamonds and 18 karat white gold ($12,600) that keeps time with dazzling precision.

Tiffany Colorful Gemstones

  • Posted on July 14, 2009 at 6:13 am

200907141efbc8d1Colored gemstones is said to be a centerpiece of Tiffany’s jewelry collections, which played a major part in establishing Tiffany as a world-renowned jeweler. These radiant gemstones are a measure of nature’s magic. Sparkling in exquisite Tiffany jewels, they are an ultimate gauge of glamour and style.

If you are enough attentive, you must have found that all Tiffany great designers have a special affection to the gemstones. Say the most familiar designer Jean Schlumberger, he utilizes a dynamic color mix to create ravishing flowers, birds, and mythical creatures. His unexpected combinations-emeralds, amethysts, yellow and blue sapphires in the magnificent Phoenix clip, for example-along with a strong sculptural quality, spark a new experience of nature’s fantastic color scheme.

Also the creative designer Paloma Picasso, one of the world’s premier designers, is celebrated for jewelry of impressive magnitude and sophistication. Favored by fashion-conscious women everywhere, the designer highlights looks in all seasons with generously scaled gemstones. Her bold ring designs underscore the unique identity of bright pink and chrome green tourmalines, lustrous tanzanites and sky-blue aquamarines.

In Tiffany House, we can say each color is a classic expression of fashion, presented with the utmost quality and craftsmanship that have distinguished Tiffany & Co. for over eight generations.

Tiffany’s First Look-Beauty and the Beads

  • Posted on July 8, 2009 at 3:34 am

200907082-1We got the latest news that Tiffany adds the Beads into Tiffany’s First Look Collection-Necklace of grossularite beads with shell of hand-carved chrysoprase, platinum-set diamonds and pink sapphires. The green is both a color and a call to celebrate the natural world. Tiffany answers with the gemstone grossularite, a green garnet. Twenty-four smooth grossularite beads were carefully selected for this elegant necklace. The polished stones are accented with a shell of hand-carved chrysoprase and pink sapphires that ingeniously hides the clasp and is embraced by a sea creature’s dazzling diamond tentacles.

The beautiful Beads was inspired by Nikki Butler. In her long modeling career, she travelled around the world, and her journeys have served as inspiration for her jewelry business. “I discovered beads on my travels and in my native South Africa,” she said. And while she loves the ethnic feel of beads, Butler describes her nikki b. line as “21st century beads that are all about simplicity, minimalism and modernity.”
